The Callaway Mack Daddy 4 Raw wedges are the latest illustration that the term “tour only” is having an increasingly short life span when it comes to golf equipment.
Originally only an option for its tour staff, the unfinished raw version of the Mack Daddy 4 wedges became a favorite of Callaway’s tour staff for their glare-reducing appearance.
The Mack Daddy 4 Raw wedges will be part of a line that will offer 15 loft/bounce/grind options that range from 50-62 degrees. The three sole grinds include the C grind with increased heel relief (50, 52, 54, 56, 58, 60 degrees), the S grind with a wider sole and rear chamfer (54, 56, 58, 60, 62) and the X grind with its higher bounce angle (54, 56, 58, 60). The 54- and 56-degree offerings are new for the X grind.
The Mack Daddy 4 Raw wedges incorporate the same shaping as the original Mack Daddy 4 wedges introduced in January, which featured compact shape, straighter leading edge and slightly more offset compared to the MD3 wedges. “Tour pros like only a subtle amount of leading-edge radius,” said Callaway wedge guru Roger Cleveland. “In the Mack Daddy 4 we gave them enough to make a performance difference while still pleasing the eye.”
As well, the Mack Daddy 4 Raw wedges feature Callaway’s new approach to groove design, which involves using two different milling techniques to raise elements above the flat surface between the grooves and then cut further into the surface for the main grooves.
The Mack Daddy 4 Raw wedges are slated to be at retail on April 13 ($150).
