NCAA Women’s Golf Championship notebook: Sooners tied for 19th; OSU’s Emma Broze tied for 24th | OU Sports Extra

Sooners fall to 19th place

An 80-minute weather delay Saturday afternoon proved beneficial for Oklahoma’s Julienne Soo, who resumed her second round with six pars and a birdie before concluding with an eagle on the final hole, No. 9.

“It kind of was just better for me to mentally settle down for a little bit,” Soo said. “I was getting a little bit anxious towards the end and I wasn’t having a good stretch, so I think it was good for me.”

Teammates Sydney Youngblood, Kaitlin Milligan and Hannah Wood were 5-over on the day, and Valerie Tanguay was 8-over. The Sooners fell into a tie for 19th place at 34-over for the tournament, which will trim to 15 teams after Sunday.

“We’re seven shots probably from the cut,” coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell said. “In team golf, we should be quickly able to catch up. But we’re playing catch-up a little bit.”

OSU’s Broze tied for 24th

Individual qualifier Emma Broze from Oklahoma State opened her second round with eight consecutive pars and finished the day at 2-over. She is tied for 24th place at 3-over for the tournament.

“I made a ton of pars, which is good, but at some point you need some birdies,” Broze said. “I made a bogey on 18 after going to the right in the rough, and I had one double bogey on 5 after just missing the fairway on the wrong side. My birdie on 8 was good.”

Broze, a senior from France, will need to climb into the top nine Sunday to advance to Monday, when the individual champion will be crowned.

“Tomorrow could be the last round of college golf for me, so I’m just going to go out and play as best as I can,” she said.

Familiar territory

Kent State coach Greg Robertson played at Oklahoma State and was a member of the Cowboys’ 1995 national championship team. His team is tied for sixth place at 19-over after two rounds.

“It’s good to be back here,” Robertson said. “My wife is actually from here, so we come back and visit every once and awhile, but to be able to come back to Karsten Creek and get her on the golf course that I played on for few years in college is always a nice treat.”
