Senior games kicks off with golf outing | Seniors

Jan Conn sat down for a break in the middle of her round to reflect on the day.

The sun created the perfect setting for the 39th annual Southwestern Pennsylvania Area Agency on Aging Senior Golf Tournament. The Ellsworth resident was hitting the links at her “home course” in this tournament for the fourth year.

“I enjoy being out with my lady friends … especially after a long winter,” said the Ellsworth resident.

Held at Chippewa Golf Course in Bentleyville, the tournament is staged each year by AAA, an affiliate of Southwestern Pennsylvania Human Services. It was open to residents of Washington, Greene and Fayette counties, 50 years of age and older.

Winners are crowned in each five-year age group, beginning with 50 to 54 years of age. There was also a contest for longest drive on hole number four and closest to the pin at hole number 17.

The tournament has been held at Chippewa for more than a decade.

This year, more than 150 golfers participated in 41 groups, mainly comprised of foursomes.

The youngest golfer was Randy Beck, 51, of Point Marion, a member of Masontown Senior Center. The oldest was Ruth Corrin, 89, of Charleroi, a member of Riverside Place in Charleroi.

The winners will be announced and trophies presented at the Senior Games banquet, scheduled for June 26 at the Hilton Garden Inn, Southpointe. Doors open at 4 p.m. and dinner is at 5 p.m. The awards will begin at 6 p.m. and entertainment by the band The Vibrations will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

The band’s leader, Ed Sumego, was among those participating in the Senior Golf Tournament. The golf outing is always a bit of a homecoming for Sumego, who is retired from the Maple Creek Mine in Bentleyville.

“My wife got me involved in the games,” Sumego said. “I wasn’t too sure until I found out it was a golf outing, then I said, ‘Sure.’”

The golf tournament is a part of the AAA Senior Games.

Sumego, 67, of Uniontown, will also be a participant in the Senior Games next month, competing in the football, softball and horseshoe throws and bocce.

“I just love all of the games,” he said. “I just love having fun and meeting such nice people.”

Paul Barton of Washington Township participated in the golf tournament for the seventh time and will attend his 11th senior games next month.

“I like to participate,” Barton said. “I like to remain active and be with good people.”
