Watertown Men’s City Golf Champs Winding Down T

Two of the top golfers in the Watertown Men’s City Golf Championship, 14 time winner, Bob Hughes, and 6 time champ, John Bufalini, found themselves just one win away from a meeting in the 36 hole match play final Sunday. But a pair of former city champs had different ideas Saturday at the Watertown Golf Club.

The first match of the day pitted the defending champ, Bufalini, against former champ, Adam Brown. At the first hole, Bufalini putted for par, but his putt slides right and by the hole, he bogeys. Second hole, Brown drives the green and has a putt for eagle that is just off and settles for a birdie. Bufalini needed to chip in for birdie to halve the hole, but couldn’t do it. Brown went1 up. At the 3rd hole, after hitting his tee shot out of bounds, Bufalini dropped a putt for bogey. Brown, in the meantime, made his par putt to go 2 up. Brown beat Bufalini 1 up.

The late match saw Hughes take on former city champ, Joe Tufo. At the third hole, Hughes 1 up. Tufo with a long putt for par but he couldn’t get it to go in.Hughes, in the meantime, sinks his par putt to go 2 up after 3 holes. On 4, Tufo putted for birdie but his putt burned the lip. He settled for par. Hughes with a birdie try to win the hole, but it slid right. He pars to remain 2 up. On 5, Hughes with a birdie opportunity but his putt came up short and to the right. Tufo with a long birdie opportunity and he sank it to cut Hughes lead to 1 up. Tufo went on to beat Hughes 1 up.

One of the biggest lacrosse tournaments in the region began it’s second and final weekend Saturday morning in Sackets Harbor as the 25th annual 1812 Shootout saw 90 teams in action. All girl in the 3rd and 4th, 5th and 6th, 7th and 8th and junior varsity divisions. Tomorrow the tournament ends with action in both the boys’ and girls’ varsity divisions with approximately 40 teams in action on Sunday.

The Watertown Rapids enjoyed an off day from their week long road trip Saturday. Friday night in Utica, the Rapids beat the Blue Sox 10-8 to win their 2nd straight game and move to 18-16 on the season. The Rapids travel to Adirondack Sunday night before returning home Monday night for a contest against Glens Falls. First pitch set for 7:05.
