Stoney Creek hosts first golf outing
The 2010 state-champion competitive cheer team will be the guests of honor at Stoney Creek’s first golf outing, set for Sept. 9 at Twin Lakes Golf and Swim Club, 455 Twin Lakes Dr., Oakland Township.
The event will include a four-person scramble, box lunch and an awards dinner. Proceeds from the event will benefit Stoney Creek athletics.
“We are so excited to bring back Stoney Creek’s first state champions, the 2010 cheer team. We hope to host this event every year and honor a different award-winning team each time,” said Julie Parks, Stoney Creek High School Booster President. “This event is a great way to bring our alumni back and let them know that Stoney Creek is still their home.”
The cost is $125 per golfer and includes 18 holes, cart, dinner, lunch at the turn, various raffles and prizes. Non-golfing guests may join the celebration for dinner, and may register for $50. The registration deadline is Aug. 29, but online registrations must be submitted by Aug. 24. Walk-up registrations will not be accepted.
Businesses interested in showing their support of the Stoney Creek community are invited to purchase a sponsorship or donate items for prizes and raffle drawings.
Sponsorships still are available at several levels, starting from $50 cart sponsorships and $150 hole sponsorships, to the $5,000 title sponsorship. All sponsors will be recognized with logo signage on the course, and all sponsorships over $500 will include a foursome (a $500 value).

Public invited to join Backyard Birders Club
The public is invited to the Aug. 29 monthly meeting of the Clarkston-Area Backyard Birders Club.
The meeting will be hosted by The Gateway Lifestyle Shop, 7150 N Main St., Clarkston beginning at 7 p.m. in the outdoors patio and gardens area if weather permits, or inside in the atrium of The Gateway. There are no charges or fees; dress is casual.
Club Founder and President Bob McGowan said, “When we launched the Birders Club last year, one of our very first speakers contributed to a strong start that took us from 18 members to our current roster of 83 members in just our first year. That speaker was Daryl Bernard, executive director of Seven Ponds Nature Center.”
“We’re delighted that on Aug. 29, Daryl will be our first speaker to do a return engagement. … He will share accounts of some truly extraordinary sightings in our area and at birding hot spots in the state in just the last few months, illustrated with some great photos of birds.”
The club welcomes guests and potential new members from the north Oakland County communities around Clarkston.

Police and Fire Departments compete in ‘Battle of the Badges’
The American Red Cross will sponsor a blood drive from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5 at the Costick Center, 28600 W. Eleven Mile Road between Middlebelt and Inkster in Farmington Hills.
This blood drive will feature the annual “Battle of the Badges,” a friendly competition between the Farmington Hills Police and Fire Departments. Donors can cast a “vote” with their blood donation to help raise the tally of either department.
During summer, there is a decrease in blood donations but an increase in need, so local inventories often fall to critically low levels. All blood types are needed, but Type O is in especially high demand since it can be transfused to patients in other blood groups and used in emergency cases when a patient’s blood type isn’t known.
