HHS’ Campbell wins medalist at MSAC golf tournament at Berry Hills | High School Sports

CHARLESTON – Huntington High’s Connor Campbell shot 2-over-par 72 Thursday to win medalist honors at the Mountain State Athletic Conference Golf Tournament at the Berry Hills Country Club.

George Washington won the team title, as four Patriots shot 78 or better, led by runner-up Joseph Kalaskey’s 3-over 73. GW shot 301, 21 strokes better than second-place Hurricane.

“That was one of our goals,” said GW coach B.J. Calabrese, who also earned MSAC coach of the year honors on Thursday. “It’s play five golfers and count four scores, so that’s kind of different than other tournaments you’re in and depth is definitely a strength for us, so this format kind of plays into our hands.”

Kalaskey was backed by John Logan Taylor (75), Colt Gillispie (75) and freshman Anderson Goldman (78).

“Anytime you get four scores in the 70s on a course like this, you’re happy,” Calabrese said. “We wanted to play up to our abilities and we certainly did that today.”

Gillispie, a junior, perhaps provided the biggest positive moving forward for GW. He stepped off the ninth hole with a 5-over 41 on the front nine and the tougher par-34 back nine staring him in the face. But Gillispie was able to put it away and ground out an even-par back side that helped the Patriots significantly.

All four of GW’s counting players made the all-conference team, given to the top six individual finishers after Campbell. Also making the cut were Woodrow Wilson’s Jackson Hill (74) and Parkersburg’s Garrett Ballway (78).
