Woodland’s Jenkins ties for 16th at 1A state golf

BLOOMINGTON — With Friday’s opening round of the IHSA Class 1A Boys State Golf Tournament washed away due to rain, the tournament was reformatted into a one-day, 18-hole, winner-take-all event on Saturday here at Prairie Vista Golf Course.

Woodland senior Tyler Jenkins, Fieldcrest senior Nick Mariotti and Seneca junior Brett Yegge were all part of a field of 111 golfers hoping to bring home the individual championship, or at the very least, a medal, but trio came up just short of that goal.

Jenkins, coming off a sectional championship last week, was the highest of the local finishers with his 80 tying him with four others at 16th place. Mariotti shot an 84 to tie for 37th place, while Yegge’s 94 put him into a deadlock at 83rd place.

Winnebago junior Marcus Smith captured the 1A title after carding a fantastic 1-under 71. The team championship went to Effingham St. Anthony with a 318, while Riverdale (324) and Hillsboro (330) finished second and third respectively.

Starting on the front nine, Jenkins scored a 41, before finishing up with a solid 39 on the final nine holes. He recorded nine pars and birdied the par-5 No. 4.

Mariotti began his day on the back and produced 42s on either side of the turn. He complied seven pars, and like Jenkins, had a 1-under on the No. 4 hole.

Yegge, starting on the back-nine, carded 47s on each the front and back nine, including a trio of pars along the way.
