DPS investigates death of Westhoff golf cart passenger | DeWitt

The Department of Public Safety is investigating the death of a Westhoff man who died after falling from a golf cart during predawn hours Sunday.

Ancelmo Adrian Cruces, 19, was pronounced dead about 8:40 a.m. at Cuero Regional Hospital, said Sgt. Ruben San Miguel, department spokesman.

Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Peggy Mayer said she did not request an autopsy.

Cruces was riding in the back of a golf cart near the intersection of Cook Avenue and Lane Street in Westhoff about 2 a.m. when he fell, striking his head on the paved roadway.

The golf cart’s driver, Abraham Zamora, 25, of Ingleside, was attempting a right turn at the time, San Miguel said. Also riding in the golf cart were Brandon Stehling, 27, of Westhoff, and Garrett Scott Stehling, 25, of Bloomington, he said.

As of Monday, no arrest had been made and no charges had been filed.

San Miguel said he could not release certain details, including whether foul play is suspected and whether intoxication may have played a role, because the death remains under investigation.

He also said he could not estimate how long the investigation would take.

“We treat every fatality crash with the utmost urgency,” he said.

In 2017, a Port Lavaca mother sued the driver of a golf cart after her son died of injuries he suffered while riding as a passenger.

Victoria County prosecutors opted to not pursue charges because of insufficient evidence.
