Doherty And Wallin Lead Women’s Golf Through Round Two At Stanford

STANFORD, Calif. (seminoles.com) – Freshman Frida Kinhult is in a tie for 13^th place in the individual standings, and the Florida State Women’s Golf Team is in seventh place in the team standings after two rounds of the Stanford Intercollegiate Hosted by Condoleezza Rice at the Stanford Golf Course. The Seminoles were led in the second round by junior All-American Amanda Doherty, and freshman Beatrice Wallin both shot scores of 69 and moved up the individual leader board.

No. 3 Southern Cal maintained its lead in the team standings and begins Sunday’s third and final round with a nine-stroke lead over Northwestern. The Wildcats shot a 5 under par team score in the second round and are within striking distance of USC with 18 holes remaining to be played. Mariel Galdiano of UCLA shot a second round score of 62 and moved into first place in the individual standings with a 36-hole score of 133. She begins the final round with a three stroke lead over Albane Valenzuela of Stanford.

“Frida and Kathleen were low for the team in round one and Amanda and Beatrice were low today,” said Florida State Director of Golf Trey Jones. “The mark of a good team is depth, and we certainly have that. With the talent on this team, odds are someone will play well each time out. One of the goals I gave them was to get better as the week goes on. We are more confident going into tomorrow than we were today. I look for us to come out and get something going early tomorrow.”

Doherty and Wallin led Florida State to a 2 over par team total of 286 in the second round which saw three of the Seminoles improve on their first round scores. Doherty improved by six strokes after carding a first round 75 while Wallin bettered her score by five shots after a first round 74. Freshman Puk Lyng Thomsen earned a nine-stroke improvement and totaled a collegiate career best score of 75.

Doherty, who ranks second all-time at Florida State with a career scoring average of 73.09, totaled a team-leading five birdies in finishing with a 2 under par score of 69. She birdied her first hole of the day to go immediately under par and was never more than 1 shot over par during the round. Doherty birdied four of her final 12 holes of the day to finish with her 11^th career single-round score in the 60’s.

Doherty was nearly flawless on her final 12 holes of the day with four birdies and 11 holes scored at par or better. Doherty moved into a tie for 27^th place in the individual standings after finishing the first round in a tie for 50^th place – she realized an improvement of 23 place in the individual standings.

Wallin, who carded her career-best score of 68 in the first round of the Schooner Fall Classic in September, came within one stroke of tying that score with four birdies and 16 holes scored a par or better. She was at her best after two early bogeys on holes 2 and 3 – she was four under par over the course of her final 15 holes of the round. Wallin totaled four birdies and 15 holes scored at par or better to finish her round.

Kinhult, who has been Florida State’s best golfer through the first three events of the fall season, carded a 2 over par score of 73. She is in a tie for 13^th place with a 36-hole total of 142. Kinhult begins play on Sunday looking for her third consecutive top-10 individual finish to begin her Seminole career after a tied for ninth place finish at the Cougar Classic and a tied for 10^th place finish at the Schooner Fall Classic.

Sophomore Kathleen Sumner has a two-round total of 149 after a 72 in round one. Thomsen improved her score from the first round by nine strokes as she shot 4 over par score of 75 in the second round. She was at her best on the front nine as she finished even par before the turn with one birdie and eight holes scored at par or better.

Florida State plays the third and final round of the event – a shot gun-start at 11:30 a.m. ET – with UCLA and Oregon. The Seminoles begin play on Sunday only five strokes out of fifth place as they look to earn their second top-five finish of the season.

Florida State Head Coach Amy Bond, who will donate $1 dollar for every birdie and $5 for every eagle by every golfer in each of the Seminoles’ final two events of the fall season to those displaced by Hurricane Michael in the Panhandle of Florida. The 89 golfers in the first two rounds of the Stanford Intercollegiate have totaled 405 birdies (including 23 by Florida State) and two eagles in the first two rounds of the event.
