Nebraska women’s golf team finishes third in final meet of fall season | Sports

The Nebraska women’s golf team ended its fall season strong, finishing third out of 12 teams at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational in Kapolei, Hawaii.

The event played as a 18-hole shootout on Wednesday afternoon after weather led to the cancellation of the first two rounds on Tuesday.

Three strokes separated the top four teams on Tuesday. Florida International University won the event with a team score of 287, one stroke under par. New Mexico State finished second with a 288, Nebraska finished third with a 289 and Sacramento State finished fourth with a 290.

Freshman Vanessa Bouvet finished tied for second, shooting a two-under 70. Bouvet recorded birdies on the par-4 ninth, 10th and 15th holes while recording only one bogey in the shootout.

She finished one stroke behind the top individual golfer, Sam Houston State’s Hannah Alberto.

Junior Kate Smith finished tied for sixth with a score of 70, one stroke under par. Smith started her round with bogeys on the eighth, ninth and 10th holes but birdied four of her final 15 holes to finish under par.

Sophomore Noor Ahmed finished tied for 17th with a score of 73, one stroke over par. Ahmed birdied four holes but bogeyed three. She also double-bogeyed the par-3 fifth hole.

Redshirt freshman and Nebraska native Kirsten Baete finished tied for 28th with a three-over score of 75. Baete’s round was inconsistent, as she bogeyed three of her first four holes but birdied the par-4 second hole. She also bogeyed the eighth hole.

On the back nine, Baete triple-bogeyed the par-4 15th but cancelled it out with a birdie on the par-5 14th and an eagle on the par-5 17th.

Junior Haley Thiele finished tied for 53rd with a nine-over score of 81. Thiele never scored worse than a double bogey on any hole but could not record any birdies to balance out her seven bogeys.

Additionally, freshman Megan Whittaker finished tied for 56th as an individual competing outside of the Husker lineup. Whittaker shot a five-over score of 41 on both the front and back nines, finishing with a 10-over 82.

The Huskers return to action when the spring season begins with the Lady Puerto Rico Classic. The event will be held in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico and will run from Feb. 10-12.
