Coaches, teams, and many others throughout the golf community in Marin knew she was coming, but seeing the performance of Kiana Briggs was another thing entirely.
At the MCAL championship, members of San Rafael’s Peacock Gap Golf Club stopped and gawked at the Novato freshman’s score of 67, four strokes under par and 11 strokes better than the next closest competitor.
The MCAL’s Player of the Year, awarded to the player with the lowest overall score on the season, Briggs was 1.69 strokes over par in the 2018 regular season, nearly seven strokes better than the next closest. She earned medalist honors — the golfer with the lowest score in a golf match — in all 15 regular matches. She was at-par or below-par in 11 of those 15 matches, seven of which were below par, making for one of if not the best girls golf season in MCAL history.
Novato coach Rick Russell said at the MCAL championships that this is just the beginning for freshman who comes from a strong family history of golfing success and while she was one stroke short of the cut to advance to the NorCal championship at the North Coast Section tournament — shooting a four-over 76 — he remains correct.
With three more years of high school golf ahead of her, Briggs is sure to treat Marin County to many more impressive performances.
