SCARBOROUGH (WGME) –Before Santa took the reins of the sleigh, he apparently took his clubs to the green.

“This all started as a dare, and of course I did it,” Ronald Hebert said, a Portland resident who dresses like Santa Claus to go golfing.

He says that the Nonesuch River Golf Club has seen his famous red suit and hat for years.

“Any year that there isn’t snow on the ground you can find me here,” Hebert said.

He says that the tradition doesn’t always happen on Christmas Eve.

“It’s really anytime during December, but I do get a lot more reactions the closer to Christmas it is,” he said.

He says Nonesuch River Golf Club fancied the tradition so much they will now let people who dress as Santa during the holiday season golf for free.

Hebert says it’s a great way to put a smile on someone’s face this holiday season.

“People seem to get excited and want to take a picture, which in turn makes me excited,” he said. “I like to lighten up and enjoy it. Cause it’s awfully stressful this time of season, and it’s nice to relax a little if you can, and have fun with it.”

He golfed a full 18, and says that he is looking forward to next year.
