Oakland sophomore Garrett Chumley discusses his low-medalist round of 68 at the region golf tournament Monday.
Cecil Joyce
Oakland’s Garrett Chumley is likely not a big fan of rain.
He was tied for 10th place at the TSSAA Large Division state golf tournament after the first day of action. But rain washed away the second day, leaving the sophomore wondering what might have happened with another round.
Either way, Chumley had a huge sophomore season, finishing as low medalist at the district (74) and region (68) tournaments to advance to his first state tournament.
Chumley is The Daily News Journal’s boys golfer of the year after leading the Patriots to the district team title and a third-place finish at the region — the best by any area schools.
He fired a 2-over 74 during first-round play at the state before the second round was cancelled. He was just three strokes off the lead at the time.
