Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama shot a 6-under-par 66 for the second straight day and landed three strokes off the lead after Friday’s second round of the Farmers Insurance Open.
Matsuyama carded an eagle and five birdies against a bogey at Torrey Pines and sits at 12-under after 36 holes. The 26-year-old chipped in for birdie to start the back nine, and followed up with a 42-foot chip shot on No. 6 after the turn.
“My drives were a lot more stable than the first day, so I was able to play comfortably. It was really nice getting two in on approach,” Matsuyama said.

“I think I’m getting nervous since I haven’t won a tournament in a long time, but I want to put (that feeling) to rest.”
The former world No. 2 is looking for his sixth win on the PGA Tour and first in over a year, having claimed his last event at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in August 2017.
England’s Justin Rose claimed the lead with a 66, while American Ryan Palmer jumped into third and first-day leader Jon Rahm of Spain fell to fourth. Japan’s Satoshi Kodaira was cut at 2-over after shooting a 74.
