Drexel Dragons – Golf Heads to Florida to Open 2019 Spring Season

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – While there may be snow on the ground in Philadelphia, the weather in Daytona Beach will be in the 80’s when the Drexel golf team opens its spring season this weekend. The Dragons will be part of a 20-team field playing at the Lonnie Barton Invitational hosted in Florida by Long Island University.

After a practice round Sunday, the teams will play 36 holes on Monday and follow that up with 18 holes on Tuesday at the LPGA International. The Rees Jones course, which was built in 1994, plays 7,088 yards from the tips. It has a slope of 142 and a 75 rating. The traditional links-style course has numerous expanses of sand bunkers, natural marsh areas, lakes and undulating greens. It will prove to be a test for the collegiate golfers, most of whom are playing competitively outdoor for the first time in 2019.

The Drexel five making the trip to Florida will be Alex Butler, Steve Cerbara, Jeffrey Cunningham, Angelo Giantsopoulos and Connor Schmidt. They will be competing against schools that include Bethune-Cookman, Bryant, Fairfield, Fairleigh Dickinson, Holy Cross, Iona, LIU, Longwood, Midway, Northern Alabama, North Carolina A&T, Sacred Heart, St. Francis (Pa.), St. Francis (N.Y.), Towson, Wagner and Wright State.
