WATERFORD — Golfers as a rule are generally early risers.

And, Waterford High senior Wesley “Wes” Jenkins is no exception.

At 8 a.m. Thursday, March 14, in the Harry Cooper Annex at the Waterford Elementary School, Jenkins signed a National Letter of Intent to continue his education and play golf at Ohio Valley University after high school graduation this spring.

OVU is an NCAA Division II school and a member of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC). The Fighting Scots are coached by Harold “Bud” Tate.

Jenkins will be joining Washington County golfers’ Caleb Scharff of Marietta High and Kyler Dennis of Warren High, already on the Ohio Valley U roster.

At Waterford during his golf career, Jenkins was known for his consistency on the links.

Lakeside Golf Club in Beverly was his home course. And, there, his best round was a 73.

Last August, Jenkins opened up his senior season with tournament-best 76 in the Washington County Championship at Oxbow Golf Course in Belpre.

The talented Wildcat senior followed that up with a 78 in the annual Waterford Invitational in Beverly, and earned all-tournament honors.

In his junior year, he shot an 82 at the same event.

In September, Jenkins was a first-team honoree at the Tri-Valley Conference Hocking Division Invitational championship at Woodridge Golf Club in Mineral Wells, W.Va., in Wood County. The year before, he fired a 2-over par 73 to claim medalist honors at the same event.

Jenkins closed out his prep golf career with a team-best 83 in the October OHSAA Division III sectional tournament at the Elks Country Club.

An all-around athlete, Jenkins was a starter on the Tom Simms-coached Waterford boys’ basketball team that was a district finalist this winter.

Jenkins is also the grandson of Cris Baker, who guided the Wildcats girls’ golf team to three straight state tournament appearances (2015-17).
