The type of golf ball you use matters

Q: I’m a medium-sized 71-year-old golf enthusiast who hits a 7-iron about 145 yards and my best drives go about 210. I don’t try to work the ball much. My handicap index is currently 9.6. Do you have any advice regarding what I should look for in a golf ball? There are so many types available that it’s a bit confusing. Thanks Gene S.

A: Based on the information in your email, this would be my suggestion to you.

You stated that you hit your 7-iron 145 yards and your driver 210 yards. This tells me that you are a good player — you don’t hit a long ball but you are consistent and have a very good short game.

That being known, I suggest you look to play with any multi-layered golf ball for lower club head speed.

This ball will give you more distance off the tee and more spin and feel around the greens.

I would have you lean more toward a ball with good feel because of your short game skills.

I also suggest you go to a ball fitting. This is the newest thing in the golf industry. You will be put on high tech computers that will measure spin and distance and fit you with the best ball to your swing.

Have fun and enjoy the game.
